In every case, there’s the legal story and then there’s the human story. A recent trial I had was about accountability, safety, and whether a hospital met the standard of care for a patient who came to them for help.
But the human story is something different. It’s about how adversity shapes us, challenges us, and ultimately strengthens our resolve.
When my client arrived at the hospital in December 2021, she did what every patient does: she trusted the system. She trusted that her pain would be taken seriously, that someone would investigate what was wrong, and that she would be treated with the urgency her condition required.
That didn’t happen.
Her symptoms weren’t fully explored. Her pain wasn’t appreciated for what it truly was. Assumptions were made, opportunities were missed, and the result was an injury that never should have happened.
When something preventable happens to you, especially at the hands of a system you relied on, it doesn’t just disrupt your life — it changes how you move through it.
But here’s the remarkable part: adversity can also ignite a different kind of strength.
My client didn’t retreat.
She didn’t let frustration or fear stop her.
She chose to confront what happened, ask the hard questions, and pursue accountability so that the next patient doesn’t go through the same thing.
That is resilience.
Not the poetic, over-romanticized version — the real kind.
The kind that comes from standing your ground, speaking your truth, and refusing to let someone else’s mistakes define your path.
Patients deserve to be listened to.
Patients deserve thorough investigation.
Patients deserve care that matches the seriousness of their symptoms.
When that doesn’t happen, the courtroom becomes the place where accountability can still be demanded.
This case is a reminder that adversity doesn’t just test you — it teaches you:
Clarity: Understanding what really happened and why.
Confidence: Knowing your voice has value, even when it was ignored before.
Fortitude: Showing up and telling your story, even when it’s uncomfortable.
My client’s path hasn’t been easy, but she’s built a level of resilience that reflects strength, not setback.
This case was about a preventable medical injury.
But it’s also about perseverance, self-advocacy, and refusing to be sidelined.
Adversity doesn’t get the final say — how you respond to it does.
And in this case, the response has been courage, persistence, and the determination to make sure what happened is fully understood, fully examined, and never repeated.
And at the end of the day, simply because 6 people chose to render a verdict against her, we still told her story and that is what matters.
As her attorney, I was proud to be able to give her story a voice despite the challenges the case faced in the legal world. Because my client’s matter and so do their stories.
